Obituary for
Mary Burton
Funeral services for Mary Burton, 92, longtime resident of Cleburne, Texas will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Field Street Baptist Church. Dr. John Hall, the Rev. John Glover and the Rev. Larry Burton will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosehill Cemetery.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 – 6 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017 at Rosser Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers will be Matt Burton, Dax Kelm, Ky Kelm, Paul Burton and Alicia Burton.
Mary passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at her home. She was born in Dallas, Texas on May 16, 1924, to Katie S. (Munden) and Louie W. Barnett.
Mary graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth, Texas in 1941 and received her Bachelor’s of Dietetics from University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.
She married Dr. Jack Burton in October 10, 1945 in Fort Worth.
Mary and Jack were very civic minded and loved Cleburne. During the late 1950’s, Mary was instrumental in getting city approval for construction of the Featherston Street low water bridge, giving easier access to Coleman Elementary. It became known by that generation as the Mary Burton Bridge.
She was a retired member of the Watch and Work Circle of the International Order of King’s Daughters and Sons. Mary was a very involved member of PTA when her children were growing up and served in all areas. She was a member of the Yellow Jacket Booster Club; a past member of the Heritage Assembly; and volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels.
Mary was a faithful member of Field Street Baptist Church for over 70 years, serving on all committees. She taught Sunday School and was involved with the Youth Ministry, Young Women’s Ministries including a young women’s Sunday School class called the Mary Burton Class; and was in charge of Homebound Ministries. Mary was a faithful and strong prayer warrior. Mary loved her family and friends and will be dearly missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Jack Burton in 1999; and daughter-in-law, Diane Burton in 2015.
Mary is survived by her son, Larry Burton of Spur, Texas; daughter, Kay Burton Kelm and husband, Larry, of Cleburne; grandchildren, Matt Burton, Dax Kelm and wife, Caroline, Ky Kelm and wife, Caroline, Paul Burton and fiancée, Sammy and Alicia Burton; and great grandchildren, Tag Kelm, Dillon Burton, Remi Kelm, and Iris Burton.
She is also survived by her caregivers who became extended family, Linda Peisley, Kelly Giaminiani and all the others who helped take wonderful care of Mary.
Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, Johnson County Child Advocacy Center or the Field Street Building Program.
