Gene Anne Wheeler Huddleston, the child of James Styus and Lena Selvey Wheeler, began life November 20, 1936 and passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.
Gene Anne spent her childhood in Cleburne, Texas where she attended public school in Cleburne ISD from elementary through high school. After graduation she began working as a student aid and was soon promoted to secretary of Cleburne High School. During her career as an educational office administrator, she served as secretary to the principal, the superintendent, and tax office manager where she would meet the love of her life. In 1963, she married Carl "Doc" Huddleston and together, they both worked in Dayton and Anahuac ISDs. They retired in 1984 to continue exploring their passion for collecting French antiques and spent time building their dream home as a beautiful display of combining their unique, respective talents.
Her life of faith embodied the true example of servant leadership as Gene Anne deeply cared for those in her family, community, and most importantly, any individual in need. She had a special devotion to and love for widows within the church and was always the first to help provide meals, transportation, and support often before request.
Gene Anne was preceded in death by her husband Carl, her parents James and Lena, her aunt, Maude Selvey, sisters, Lena Will Wheeler, Carlene Wheeler King, nephew, Kerry Wheeler King and precious friend, Saundra Williams. She is survived by nephews, Dr. Keith Lynn King, Jack King, Jr., niece, Carol King Sullivan, grandnephew, Brian Sullivan and wife Donna, grandniece, Staci Sullivan Markwood and her children, Madison Hunter and husband, Nathan, Tyler Markwood, and Kenzie Markwood, all who will ensure the light of her legacy carries forward.
The family wishes to extend its appreciation to the Williams and Utley families who have been an extension of ours for so many years, the precious Christian friends who have helped care and extend their love over Gene Anne and our family, the loving hospice care provided by Wings over Texas, as well as the incredible staff at Grandview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center who cared for her in the final steps of her earthly journey.
On Saturday, April 20, 2024 a visitation will be held at Westhill Church of Christ at 10:00 a.m. with a celebration of life to follow at 11:00 A.M., where memories of her will bloom as brightly as she cherished her garden. She will be laid to rest at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery with the same quiet dignity that she carried throughout her life.
