Joe Elson Herr
Joe Elson Herr, 79 of Cleburne, died on April 9, 2014 in Fort Worth following a prolonged illness.
Joe was born in Winterset, Iowa on December 31, 1934 to Stacy Rush Herr and Leta Benson Herr. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for the rescue of a downed pilot in the South China Sea during a typhoon. After retiring from the Air Force in 1973, Joe and his wife, Sylvia, chose to make their home in Cleburne.
Joe is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dr. Sylvia Lansford Herr. He leaves behind three sons: Joe Herr and wife, Ruth of Grapevine; Jim Herr of Fort Worth; and Ben Herr of Austin. He is also survived by two daughters: Susan Herr Thomas and husband Terry of Austin; and Holly Herr of Arlington; and two grandsons: Adam and Caleb Thomas of Austin. He has one brother, Marvin Phillips and wife, Ellen of Salisbury, Maryland.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Rosser Funeral Home with a visitation starting at 1 p.m. before the service.
A military burial will be held at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery at 9 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2014.
Donations may be made in Joe’s honor to The Disabled Veteran’s Association or your local animal shelter as Joe loved dogs.
