Obituary for Jane Pickens Heyward

Graveside service for Jane Pickens Heyward, 82, of Cleburne, Texas will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014 in Rosehill Cemetery. Dr. Jimmy Finley will officiate. There is no visitation.
Jane passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014 in Fort Worth, Texas. She was born Sept. 10, 1932 in Fort Worth, Texas to Virgie Mae (Adams) and Dr. J.W. Pickens.
Jane married Steven Doar Heyward in July of 1985. She was a loving mother and devoted wife.
She worked for the CISD for 30 years in many areas. Jane is remembered as Cleburne High School’s guidance counselor, working as the sole counselor and senior sponsor for most of her carreer. Before computerization, she was responsible for hand-figuring every student’s GPA. She administered all college entrance testing. Jane also administered GED testing not only here in Cleburne but traveled to prisons helping inmates achieve their equivalency. She began the Head Start program for CISD in the 60’s.
Jane was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, MENSA, Licensed Professional Counselors of Texas, Texas Personal Guidance Association, TSTA, NEA, TRTA and the Johnson-Somervell Retired Teachers Association. She grew up in the First Presbyterian Church and in recent years was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cleburne. Jane was one of the founders of the Stephen Ministries Counseling Training. Ahead of her time, Jane was always an independent woman.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
She is survived by her son, Hardy Jones of Kansas City, Missouri; brother, Jay Pickens of Fort Worth; nephew, Dr. Jeff Pickens and wife, Kathryn, of Georgetown, Texas; nieces, Ginger Keys of Arlington, Betty Wallace and husband, Butch, of Athens, Texas and Ginny Van Stavern and husband, Neil of College Station, Texas; great-nephew, Ben Pickens; great-nieces, Brianna, Kelsey and Kamryn Keys; cousins, Charles Kraft and wife, Doris, of Austin, Texas and Mary Ann Kraft of Dallas, Texas.
