Obituary for John Wesley "J. W. " Massengale

Funeral services for John Wesley “J. W.” Massengale, 91 of Lamesa, Texas will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2016 in the Rosser Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Mark Hackett officiating.
Burial will follow in Rosehill Cemetery.
There is no visitation scheduled.
Mr. Massengale passed away Friday, August 12, 2016 in Lamesa. He was born in Blum, Texas on May 8, 1925, the son of Wanda (Johnson) and John Massengale.
John graduated from Cleburne High School. Serving in the US Army during WWII, he was the Flight Engineer on the mission that flew over Hiroshima.
He returned from service and married the love of his life, Ruth Ellen Prince on October 2, 1948 in Sequin, Texas. while John was playing football for Clifton College.
He received his Masters of Education from North Texas State. John served as a high school teacher, coach and administrator for 36 years in Aleman, Sidney and Flower Grove.
He was inducted into the 6-man Football Coach’s Hall of Fame in 2003.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gene, Homer and Irvin Massengale and sisters, Cleo (Massengale) Valentine, Esther (Massengale) Stevens and Ellen (Massengale) Fitzgerald.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Massengale; daughter, Diane (Massengale) Banton and husband Mark; grandchildren, Josh Moore and wife, Blanca, Jayci (Moore) and Terrell Lawson, Jason Banton, Mandi (Banton) and James Fielder and Melissa (Banton) and Randy Miles; and 10 great-grandchildren, Samantha, Slade, Rylan, Aynsli, Wesley, Adrienne, Kaitlyn, Nolan, Anastyn and Jaxon.
Memorials may be made to the Lamesa Church of Christ, 702 N. 14th Street, Lamesa, TX 79331.
