Della May went peacefully to rest in Jesus surrounded by her family and close loved ones. She passed away from age-related complications Tuesday, May 17, 2016 in Keene, Texas. She was born in Garden Grove, Iowa on December 20, 1927, the daughter of Maggie M (Houdesheldt) and Wayne M. Barber.
Della May Patterson, a homemaker and member of the Alvarado Seventh-day Adventist Church, was an avid community service volunteer. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. On March 28, 1948, Della married Keith R. Patterson in Corydon, Iowa. Throughout their years together, the couple welcomed and cherished their five sons and one daughter.
Della’s generous heart, love of people, and service to the community flowed out of her passion for Jesus. Nothing brought Della more joy than to be surrounded by her family and friends and to hear from those she loved.
We will never forget her sparkly eyes, the way she said "be-e-a-utiful" like a six-syllable word, her great stories, her mischievous humor, her tender heart, her delight in good cooking and special treats of all varieties. Always ready with her quick wit and sage advice – and so many other things big and small— she sprinkled wisdom throughout our lives. We will always be grateful to have had her gracious and unconditional love in our lives. We will miss her more than words can ever say.
Mrs. Patterson was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald Barber; sisters, Glendoris Barber, Fletta Diamond and Erma Means; and daughter, Marilyn K. Patterson.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Keith Patterson of Alvarado; sons, Richard Patterson of Neodesha, Kansas, Stanley E. Patterson and wife, Glenda, of Berrien Springs, Michigan, Ronald Patterson of Cleburne, Texas, Gary Patterson and wife, Cheryl, of Centralia, Missouri, and David Patterson and wife, Barbara, of Keene, Texas; daughter, Sharon Patterson of Bay City, Texas; her twin brother, Delbert Barber and wife, Pat, of Ozark, Missouri; brother, Robert Bloom and wife, Norma, of Lawrence, Kansas; sister, Delane Overton of Baytown; half brothers, Larry and Kevin Barber; half sisters, Dorothy Yost, Gaynell Moore, Karen O’Hara and Susan Giffin; 16 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
