Robert "Kevin" Owen passed away at home in Cleburne on Sunday February 9, 2025. He was born on January 24, 1952 in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Bobbie (Rogers) and J. B. Owen.
Kevin graduated from high school in Jacksboro, Texas. He went on to continue his football career at Texas A&M and later graduated from Texas A&M vet school in 1977. Kevin planted his roots in Cleburne in 1978, opening his veterinary practice, Northside Animal Clinic. He began ranching in 1983 at Big Tree Ranch, later becoming Big Tree Ostrich Ranch.
A well-respected figure to the community Kevin, or as many knew him as "Doc," received numerous accolades. These included prestigious awards from Johnson County, the State of Texas Rancher of the Year, and Texas A&M DVM large animal veterinarian of the year. He was also the founder and president of the American Ostrich Association.
Most recently he enjoyed riding his tractor, tending to his large herd of water buffalo, and loved watching all eight of his grandkids participate in sports. He always cheered them on with pride and joy (and often coached or called the next football play to the ones he was sitting by). He leaves behind a legacy, including honor and hard work, that will continue to inspire all that knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, JB and Bobbie Owen; his brother, John Owen; his wife, Iryna Spangler Owen; and daughter-in-law, Sally Owen.
Kevin is survived by his son, Joshua Owen of Jacksboro; daughters, Tana Owen Hill of Aledo, Shilo Owen Cornish and husband, Cade, of Jacksboro, and Nadia Owen of Cleburne; grandchildren, Tyler Britton, Gage Owen, Karlie Britton, Emma Owen, Lucas Cornish, Dax Hill, Maggie Owen, and Laney Cornish; and one great grandchild Maya Owen.
Kevin will be buried in Jacksboro, Texas in a private family service.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2025, at Chisholm Trail Church in Rio Vista, Texas with Pastor Wade Yarbro officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chisholm Trail Church Arena Fund at: https://chisholm-trail-church.churchcenter.com/giving/to/ctc-arena-fund.
