Robert Poindexter, a beloved and transcendent artist has died. Born in Fort Worth, Texas on January 25, 1954, Poindexter passed surrounded by his closest family on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.
Robert left us peacefully in his sleep. In his last hours, Hemingway was read aloud while his favorite Bob Dylan songs played. His family is endlessly grateful for having this private moment together.
Robert received his MFA in Painting from the University of Houston in 1984. During his time in Houston, he had 12 solo and numerous group exhibitions, represented by Meredith Long Gallery, Sally Sprout Gallery, and Susana Sheffield Gallery.
While in Florida, Robert showed with Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art in Sarasota, Florida, as well as a joint show in Orlando, Florida with his wife, Carla Poindexter, curated by his daughter, Sara Poindexter, titled "Our Small Private Stories". Carla is not only Robert's life partner, but was also his closest confidant, for whom he had the deepest respect. "..Even without knowing the dynamic between the artists, a viewer can't help but notice how the works complement one another, how they play off one another, that there's something more going on than just two artists who happen to share a gallery show or a last name - that the artists do indeed seem to have a small, private story that they're telling via art." - written by Erin Sullivan in her review for Orlando Weekly.
Over the last decade of his life, Robert and Carla had amazing experiences and journeys with their closest family and have been part of an extraordinary community of artists and friends in Orlando, Florida.
"Robert was a unique part of all our lives...a great raconteur, a good friend, and a sympathetic, talented fellow artist. So many happy memories...He will be sorely missed", writes dear friend, George Donald.
"Lost a crazy great friend today...He was all in with Art! He loved his equally crazy beautiful wife and worshiped his amazing daughter." shared by Robert Rivers, one of his closest friends and artist. "I was blessed to be part of the three Roberts", which includes artist, Rob Reedy. Poindexter, Rivers, and Reedy, the three Roberts, spent countless hours sharing stories and laughter, and contemplating life and art, together.
"If I could write, my words would read like these watercolor paintings, if I could create music, my music would sound like my ink drawings, with all their joy, with all their sadness" - an excerpt from Robert's Artist's Statement.
Robert Coggin Poindexter is survived by his wife, Carla Poindexter, and his children Sara Poindexter and Jim Wells as well as their spouses Marc Chartier and Andrea Wells.
