Services celebrating the life of Walter Schoenfeld, 86, of Cleburne, Texas will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2012 at First United Methodist Church of Cleburne. The Rev. Robert Herzig will officiate.
Mr. Schoenfeld passed away on Monday, April 16, 2012 in Cleburne. He was born in Vienna, Austria on September 27, 1925, the son of Dorothy (Hess) and Robert Schoenfeld.
Walter came to the United States in 1938 at the age of 13. He moved to Denton in 1944 and then to Cleburne in 1949 where he married Earline Spikes. The couple raised two sons, Shawn and Fel.
Walter graduated from North Texas State College Demonstration H. S. in Denton and attended North Texas State University earning Bachelor of Arts Degree. He received his Master of Education from T.C. U. and continued with post graduate work at Baylor University and Southwestern Adventist University.
Walter taught in the Cleburne ISD for 33 years at the Jr. High and Senior High levels. He retired in 1987. This however in no way slowed Walter down!
An active member of First United Methodist Church, Walter sang in the Chancel Choir, played in the Bell Choir and was a member of the FUM Men’s Organization. He volunteered in the office, did telephone ministry and was the “voice” of Christmas and Easter narrations for many years. Walter was an active member of the Greater Cleburne Carnegie Players.
A member of the Cleburne Yellow Jacket Booster Club, he served as president and was the public address voice of Cleburne Athletic events and of the Golden Pride of Cleburne High band for over 20 years.
Walter was also a charter member of the Cleburne Early Bird Kiwanis Club where he served as president on several occasions, receiving speaker certificates and officer honors. Her served as Lt. Governor of Division I, Kiwanis International and was a delegate to numerous Kiwanis conventions on the state, national and international levels.
He was a member of Texas Retired Teachers Association and the Association of Texas Professional Educators. He also was a member of the Texas State Teacher’s Association, serving as local and district President as well as becoming a member of the State Executive Committee and Walter served on the Teacher Training Advisory Board for Southwestern Adventist University in Keene.
In 1989, Walter began working with Literacy Volunteers of America, joining the board in 1990.
Since 1976, Walter was associated with Martin’s Funeral Home in Cleburne, joining Rosser Funeral Home as a part-time associate in 2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Walter Schoenfeld is survived by his wife of 62 years, Earline Spikes Schoenfeld of Cleburne; sons, Shawn Schoenfeld of Arlington and Fel Schoenfeld of Grapevine; grandchildren, Alban, Lauren, Sam and Cole.
