Gene was born May 31, 1935 to Erwin Otto and Velma Ruth Baker Schubert in Iraan, Texas. He was a longtime resident of El Paso, Texas. Gene grew up dreaming of being a cowboy – he loved the cowboy ways. Early in his ranching career Gene managed the Sand Ranch in Notrees, Texas working for Sonny Henderson. Later he moved to Goodland, Kansas working for Garvey Ranch Management managing a 30 section ranch cow/calf operation. Eventually, he relocated to El Paso working for Paul Dean Cattle Company traveling the interior of Mexico purchasing steers to cross into the United States. It was in El Paso that his passions began to change radically. Gene was ambushed by Christ the Sovereign Lord and His irresistible grace in 1970. From the ranch to the streets in El Paso, Gene, a recovering alcoholic, had a burning passion to reach the drug addicts and those in bondage to alcoholism. The Call of God was confirmed and Gene and wife Mary opened the White Dove Ministry in 1972 located across the street from the San Jacinto Plaza in downtown El Paso. The ministry blossomed and mobilized by the way of converted school buses to mobile coffee houses sharing the Gospel on the streets of El Paso. Ultimately this lead to a mobile bus ministry to the 3rd Cavalry Armored Division at Ft. Bliss sharing the gospel with the soldiers on base and in the field.
In Gene’s last 10 years of his earthly life he developed, organized, and directed the Cleburne Bible Church Benevolence ministry as an outreach to the lost, poor, and needy people of Johnson County. Although financial aid was the focus, the proclamation of the Gospel was foundational. As the scripture states, “the poor have the gospel preached to them”. Gene’s life exemplified that those who are forgiven much, love much.
Surviving is Gene’s loving wife, Mary Schubert, children, John and Carla Schubert of Ft. Worth, Texas, Russ and Rhonda Schubert of Cleburne, Texas; grandchildren, Katie, John, Jr., Weston, Justin, Bryce, and Madison Schubert; and step-grandson’s Levi Beaird and Ralph A. Ojeda.
