Dora Loutitia “Bibbs” Sherman was born January 14, 1928 in Godley Texas to a share cropper family. Being the youngest girl in a family with 10 children didn't save her from the fields, she started dragging a cotton sack when she was just two years old and spent many long hours picking cotton in her youth. She was a star basketball player at Godley high school where she met the true love of her life Willie Joe Sherman. They were married January 30, 1946 in Ft. Worth, two weeks after her 18th birthday (as soon as they could without her father's consent). She went back to school the following Monday with no one in Godley knowing they were married except 1 teacher that read it in the newspaper but promised not to tell. She graduated from Godley High later that year and began a 52 year adventure with Joe.
They would have three children, Gina, Jim, and Jan. Live in Ft. Worth and Houston Texas, Charlotte North Carolina, Newport News Virginia, and Albuquerque New Mexico, before settling in Gallup for the last 46 years. They owned and managed several businesses including Ya Te Hay shopping center, The Dairy Stop, and Sherman's Factory Outlet, Sherman's of Gallup, and Sherman's Boots and Jeans. The common thread through all these businesses was Bibbs and her Indian Jewelry. They exhibited at the Ft. Worth Stock Show for 30 years where they made many long lasting friendships and each year was a mini family reunion. Always a hard worker she was a true working partner in all these endeavors and was a strong steady influence through good times and bad. Somehow she still made time to be a wonderful homemaker for Joe and the kids. She had a lifetime love of country music and met several country music stars. Bibbs was a talented and graceful dancer and all eyes were on them when they took to the dance floor. A true southern belle she charmed everyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her husband Willie Joe, parents John Madison and Nannie Louellen Bryant, brothers and spouses Johnny and Estelyene, Dan and Emily, Leo and Oleta, JT, Robert Irvin, sisters and spouses Minnie and Leard Hinman, Myrtle and Bo Montgomery, Virgie and John McCrary, sister in law Quida Bryant.
