Gracie Mae Southerland
Services for Gracie Mae (Jones) Southerland 100 years old; a life long resident of the Bono Community will be conducted 2:00p.m., Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Field Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Bono Cemetery. Dr. John Hall and John Glover will be officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 7, 2017 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Rosser Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Mike Southerland, Jimmy Poorman, Jeffrey Poorman, Gregory Clapp, Ryan Clapp, Matt Southerland, and Mark Allen.
Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews and great grandsons.
Gracie Southerland was born the first of four children to Loyd Clifton Jones and Lillie May (McFadden) Jones on September 2, 1916 in Bono, Texas. She was the great granddaughter of Calvin Lafayette Jones whose family was one of the first two settlers to the area. Mr. Jones is known to have given the name “Bono” meaning friendly to the community. As a child of ten years she accepted Christ as Savior during a summer revival held by the Bono Baptist Church under the community tabernacle.
She was a member of Field St. Baptist Church since 1957. She served as Secretary for Adult I Senior Department for many years. She was also a member of Tentmakers Sunday School Class. Gracie was a last charter member of the Bono Extension Education Club (Home Demonstration Club) that was reorganized in 1948.
Gracie was proceeded in death by her husband of 61 years, Eaphy A. Southerland who passed away on October 13, 1998; parents, Loyd and Lillie Jones; brothers, LC Jones, JR (2002), Capt. Robert Morris Jones (1945); and sister, Ora Lee Powers (2010).
She is survived by her sons, Billy Southerland of Cleburne, TX, Steven Southerland of Arlington, TX, Randy Southerland and wife, Donna, of Cleburne; daughters, Elaine Poorman of Angola, NY, Kathy Clapp and husband, Bob, of Parrish, FL; thirteen grandchildren; two step grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
