Sandy Virden
Sandy Virden died peacefully Saturday morning, August 27, 2016 in Arlington after a lengthy illness. She was born July 18, 1943 in Honey Grove, Texas to Vernell and William Carmichael.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 3 at St. Mark’s Church, 2024 S. Collins, Arlington. Reception and luncheon at the church will follow.
Sandy loved God, family, friends, gardening, books and travel. She graduated from Kimball High School in Dallas, University of Texas-Arlington and the University of North Texas. She spent many years as a teacher and librarian in Arlington and Fort Worth schools. After retirement, she started svirdenbooks, an online seller of rare and collectible books, which she operated until her death. For years she served her church in different ways including Sunday school teacher, and altar guild and stewardship committee member. In addition, she was a Rotarian and served in her club’s literary and mentoring projects.
Over the years, she and Walter, her husband of 52 years, traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad.
Sandy was predeceased by her parents and her grandparents, Joseph and Ada T. Gray.
In addition to her husband, Sandy is survived by her children and their spouses; Alice and Arturo Rodriguez, Walter IV and Robyn Virden, and David Virden. She is known as GiGi to her grandchildren: Isabella, Nicolas, Diego, Jackson and Oliver Rodriguez; Walter V, Henry and Jude Virden.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sandy’s memory to St. Mark’s Church or the charity of your choice.
